JOANNA SZYMAJDA

An assistant professor at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences, a cultural manager. She defended her doctoral thesis at Université Paris III Sorbonne Nouvelle and the University of Łódź. She holds master's degrees in cultural studies and psychology from the University of Łódź and Université Lyon II. She also completed postgraduate studies in diplomacy and business management at SGH in Warsaw. From 2010 to 2017, she served as the deputy director of the [National] Institute of Music and Dance, from 2018 to 2020 as the ballet director at the Wrocław Opera (together with Jacek Przybyłowicz), and in 2007-2010 and 2021/2022 as the artistic coordinator of the International Contemporary Dance Festival Body/Mind, occasionally working as a dramaturge. She collaborates with the Theatre Academy in Warsaw and the University of Łódź. She is the co-editor, along with Professor Małgorzata Leyko, of the "Dictionary of Contemporary Dance" (University of Łódź Press, 2022). She is also the author of the book "The Aesthetics of Contemporary European Dance after 1990" (Księgarnia Akademicka, 2013); editor of "European Dance since 1989: Communitas and the Other" (Routledge/IMiT 2014) and "Polish Avant-Garde Dance Artists" (IMiT/IAM 2017).
