2016/2017 season

1.09.2016
Every successive artistic season is a new chapter in the history of the theatre. It contains a desire to continue the opera’s traditions, but also an irresistible urge to introduce some new elements into it. At the same time, it represents our unavoidable confrontation with all the numerous and varied expectations harboured by you – the addressees of our actions. The process of composing our premiere programme resembles that of a good menu, in which everyone will find the dish that interests them, professionally served, made from ingredients of the highest quality and prepared by the best master chefs.
It goes without saying that it is extremely difficult to satisfy all gourmets, nevertheless one has to incessantly strive to do so, serving dishes that are well-known and popular, as well as some new ones, which are as yet only intended to suit the tastes of our audiences. When we look at the list of our over three hundred premieres, we are bound to notice that in the course of its fifty year activity, The Grand Theatre in Łódź has never shied away from novelties, repertoire experiments and artistic innovations; the list comprises Polish premieres of opera and ballet works, first post-war performances, premieres of works by contemporary Polish composers and spectacles which have been composed especially for our stage. There has also never been a lack of evergreen opera classics. Regardless of their genre and date of creation, the common trait of all the works is an attention to the highest possible artistic level, both with regards to the stage setting and adaptation and to the actual performance.
In the jubilee artistic season of 2016/2017, we are not stepping back from those excellent achievements and we intend to propose a repertoire that is varied and unconventional, perhaps a little surprising, nevertheless continually prepared with the greatest involvement and care for the highest possible artistic quality. Alongside classics, which are the basis of an opera’s existence, there are going to be proposed titles that are quite new or that are going to be presented on our stage for the first time. Hence, the names of eminent theatre authors whose talent and artistic achievement are to us guarantees of quality and to you – of satisfaction and enjoyment during the time spent in our Theatre.
The season is going to be inaugurated with Piotr Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, an opera work which for decades has been enjoying success on stages worldwide, whereas exactly on the 50th anniversary of the first premiere on that stage, just as in 1967, we are planning to put up Stanisław Moniuszko’s Halka. We have prepared the world premiere of Alexander Tansman’s Golden Fleece, a work that has never been staged before, with the co-operation of the Tansman Festival, and the Łódź premiere of Semele, Georg Fredrich Händel’s opera oratory, together with the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy and the Władysław Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź. We are hoping to satisfy the cravings of lovers of the art of dance with two diametrically different premieres – the first performance of Maciej Pawłowski’s Lamaila, a contemporary fantasy ballet and of Aram Khachaturian’s legendary Spartacus, never before staged in Łódź. There is also another, already 24th edition of the Łódź Ballet Festival ahead of us, whose programme we have attempted to construe in such a way for it to mirror, as widely as possible, what is most current and worthwhile in world ballet, and for the invited companies to meet your artistic expectations.
The legendary publicist, music critic and writer, the unforgettable Jerzy Waldorff, when speaking once about The Grand Theatre in Łódź, added a subtitle to the opera house’s name – Tradition and Modernity. We desire that expression not only to be valid in the current – jubilee – season, but we wish it to characterise the artistic profile of The Grand Theatre in Łódź on a regular basis, and we are going to spare no effort to achieve that. It is our deep belief that our artistic menu is going to rouse your interest and win your acceptance, and that your visits to our new spectacles and to those which have already become part of our repertoire will bring you enjoyment, satisfaction and many artistic experiences and emotions.
We thus cordially invite you and look forward to seeing you!
