An opera in four acts. Performance staged in Polish language with English surtitles.
While Fryderyk Chopin gained great recognition in France as a cultural ambassador of an oppressed nation, his younger contemporary, Stanisław Moniuszko, worked in the cultural field in his own homeland. Like Chopin, Moniuszko combined Western European romanticism with the spirit of Polish culture in his works. HALKA is undoubtedly an example of a successful fusion of Italian, French, and German opera traits with elements typical of Polish folklore and tradition. Moreover, this opera, thanks to its patriotic and critical portrayal of social relations, became an expression of national identity.

To understand this operatic allegory about an abandoned girl, one must place it in the context of social discord that led to the bloody Galician slaughter during Moniuszko's time. Halka is a character suspended between two worlds: the corrupt nobility and the vengeful highlanders. There are no unequivocally good or bad characters here. This is not a tearful melodrama. It is a cruel parable of human loneliness.
