Giuseppe Verdi, the composer of dozens of operas including hits like "La Traviata," "Aida," "Rigoletto," and "Il Trovatore," almost never ventured beyond the realm of opera composition. However, the death of the eminent Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni, a close friend of Verdi's, deeply moved the composer. In tribute to Manzoni, Verdi decided to honor his memory by composing the "Messa da Requiem" (the full title). Although rooted in Christian ideas and symbols, Verdi's work is not a typical funeral Mass in the liturgical sense. The composition emerged spontaneously as an expression of sorrow and grief over the loss of his friend—a grief so profound that Verdi could not bring himself to attend the poet's funeral. It is this deeply moving sentiment that gives the Requiem its intense emotional impact on the listener, with the sincerity of the emotions Verdi experienced during its creation resonating in every note played by the orchestra and sung by the choir.
We invite you to experience this beautiful piece on November 3, 2024, performed by soloists, choir, and orchestra of the Grand Theatre in Łódź under the baton of Rafał Janiak. As this date is so close to All Saints' Day, a time for contemplation and reflection on the passage of time and the meaning of life, let us remember, like Maestro Verdi himself, all our friends and loved ones who are no longer with us.
Brahms regarded Verdi's composition as a work of genius, so it is worth taking a moment to listen and immerse ourselves in reflection. You are cordially invited to join us!
